A Love Plot Truly

Reccommended - Windy City Times
“Though you can sense echoes of Tennessee Williams… Dir forges his own poetics and touches of fantasy…”

A Love Plot Truly is at once a coming of age tale, an homage to the Southern Gothic, and a raucous fable. Irene, a young girl on the verge of her own sexual awakening, constructs a "love plot" to link her sister to a mysterious drifter. As she struggles to find her place in rural Georgia, the uptight town Doyenne plots to take Irene away from her family and give her a "normal" life. Alas, no one in this play seems to know what normal is.

Written by Ensemble Member Drew Dir
Directed by Managing Director K. Michael Renehan

Featuring Ensemble Members Joan McGrath, Amanda Monfrooe, and Susan Wingerter, with guests Shane Kenyon and Rebecca Sohn.

“…shows off Dir’s distinct voice as a playwright and pegs him as
someone to watch out for in the future.”

Irene prays to the salt and pepper shakers, which are shaped like a boy cow and a girl cow, which is cute, but not really, in her opinionFireflies.

SYMPOSIUM 2007-Get Some Play
Plato's Symposium was a fierce discussion between wildly different intellectuals on the nature of love. Hypatia Theatre Company’s first annual SYMPOSIUM brought together four emerging and provocative playwrights for a week of development with a passionate group of collaborators. Each of the scripts, in its own way, addressed the subject of love. Like the Symposium of the Greeks, the plays inspired debate and discussion, but with fewer togas and a lot more female input.
A rigorous week of revision and rehearsal culminated with two evenings of staged readings at Stage Left Theatre, February 5th and 6th of 2007. In the end, both A Love Plot, Truly and Lost Love were chosen for Hypatia’s 2007 Season.

The "Get Some" Plays:

Lost Love by Peter Papadopoulos- directed by Jason Demma
A Love Plot, Truly by Drew Dir- directed by K. Michael Renehan

“Four Stars”-Time Out Chicago

Hypatia’s sophomore production, the world premiere of Florida Styx, follows Red Georgia Clay as the next chapter in Parrish’s thematic trilogy that explores unnatural death from a uniquely Neo-Southern Gothic perspective. A story of daughters and the mothers who regret them, Florida Styx is about waiting and wanting to go. Faced with possibility of love, the presence of death, and the maddening shrieks of the birds on her roof, Jordan must decide how far she is willing to go for departure and flight.

“Critic’s Pick… spot on performances… Parrish is aces with poetic dialogue…” –Time Out Chicago
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED… Spellbinding… haunting beauty…all the mystery of classic tragedy…” -The Chicago Reader
This young company continues to deliver on its goal to "engage everyone with questions that lead to a cathartic theatrical experience." It also continues to reinforce Chicago's vibrant and fearless theatrical standards. "Florida Styx" is a prime example of the commitment to artistic vision that this city nurtures.” –Gay Chicago Magazine

Hypatia Theatre Company's Debut Production
Marcus and Lo Sutton are Southern Baptist Florida teens raised by their father, who has one hell of a mean streak. In the interest of Southern politeness, no one, not even Marcus and Lo, ever talks about the abuse. When the oppressive patriarch dies, the siblings find themselves in the company of some unlikely companions: their outcast peers, Foster and Ada--and one another. Red Georgia Clay is the blood beneath the surface, a hidden river of pain, winding its way under the warm Southern beaches, ever rising and threatening to break through.

“…the impressive material and terrific ensemble deliver an outstanding production... one of the most impressive first productions of a fledgling theater company that I've seen in years...”--Gay Chicago Magazine
